Why Did I Decide to Build My Own Electronic Birthday Cake App?

In 2025, on my girlfriend's birthday, we decided to go out to Haiyan Village by Dianchi Lake and have dinner together at sunset to celebrate her birthday.

Unlike usual, to avoid wasting cake, I didn't buy a full birthday cake this time. Instead, I ordered a mini cake from a food delivery platform. Unfortunately, I completely forgot about the candles. By the time I realized it, it was too late.

I wasn't willing to let the birthday atmosphere be dampened, so I started searching online for apps that could simulate blowing out birthday candles. But I found they were all far from what I imagined. I began to think, in such a desperate situation, what kind of tool would actually be useful?

I think it would need to have these characteristics:

1. Cross-platform. To reach more "victims," we can't assume users have a specific operating system. In my opinion, this program should be provided as a web app. Users don't want to download apps one by one when they're in a rush - they want something that works immediately.
2. Personalized cake scene. It should support a certain degree of personalization, like choosing different cake styles. Most importantly, the number of candles should match the birthday person's age, and it should allow entering the birthday person's name.
3. Interactive. Not just extinguishing candles through timing or simple button clicks, but truly "blowing" - microphone-sensing breath to make the user's blowing action interact with the scene on the screen.
4. Immersive atmosphere. With flickering candlelight, effects of candles being blown by air, animations when extinguishing, celebration effects after extinguishing, etc. And it should support full screen to enhance the atmosphere.

Admittedly, real cake and candlelight are definitely more atmospheric. Forgetting to buy candles was indeed an unforgivable mistake. But I thought, if there was such a useful app, wouldn't it be able to save such a birthday party to some extent, and even turn the accident into a surprise?

Moreover, electronic birthday cakes have their advantages: safe, environmentally friendly, hygienic, and convenient.

Thinking about this, I deeply felt that this ideal tool of mine could potentially help many people around the world.

After thorough research, I found that no app could satisfy all these requirements at once. Thus, the idea of developing an app that allows people to blow out candles in a browser was planted in my heart.

A few months later, I registered the domain birthday-cake.online and started developing this application. With the help of Google AI Studio, the product developed was satisfactory in both visual effects and functionality.

I am still continuously improving this product. I hope my efforts can bring a small but beautiful change to the world.
